Skill Explanations

Main-hand Sword

Autochain

https://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/thumb/a/a0/Mind_Slash.png/48px-Mind_Slash.png https://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/thumb/d/de/Mind_Gash.png/48px-Mind_Gash.png https://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/thumb/4/46/Mind_Spike.png/48px-Mind_Spike.png

Use this as a filler in between your rotation

The third attack of your chain to removes a boon, especially helpful against the Blue Guardian and Spirits affected by Etheral. The third auto attack has a longer aftercast than the others which can make it hard to time invulns with signet or phantasm summons, stow your weapon if needed to interrupt the chain.

Blurred Frenzy

https://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/thumb/6/60/Blurred_Frenzy.png/48px-Blurred_Frenzy.png

One of your most flexible skills, allows you to avoid a lot of attacks without having to dodge i.e. Sloth’s Flame Breath, Vale Guardian’s Unstable Magic Spike (blue) or Gorseval’s Ghastly Prison, just to name a few.

Very helpful to keep bosses in place while tanking because you don’t drag the boss out of AoE effects with dodging away

It is also a DPS increase over just auto attacking.

Illusionary Leap/Swap

https://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/thumb/1/18/Illusionary_Leap.png/48px-Illusionary_Leap.png https://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/thumb/f/fd/Arcane_Thievery.png/48px-Arcane_Thievery.png

Mainly used for the extra Illusion to be able to cast Continuum Split faster at the start of a fight.

Otherwise you can use it for extra CC from the 2 second Immobilize(200 breakbar damage).

The Clone will also use the normal Mesmer auto attack rotation meaning it will strip a boon on its third auto. It will not move while attacking, moving the blue guardian can make the clone miss its boon strip.

Focus

Temporal Curtain/Into the Void

https://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/thumb/b/b8/Temporal_Curtain.png/48px-Temporal_Curtain.png https://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/thumb/5/52/Vortex.png/27px-Vortex.png

One of the best skills in the game in PvE regarding utility, in raids it can be used to pull Seekers, Gorsevals spirits, Slothasors Slublings, Mobs at Escort or Xeras adds.

Also useful for CC if there’s nothing else to pull or, if traited, used to reflect certain attacks.

Phantasmal Warden

https://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/thumb/4/4f/Phantasmal_Warden.png/48px-Phantasmal_Warden.png

A low damage Phantasm that absorbs projectiles(or reflects them if traited)

Off-hand Sword

Illusionary Riposte/Counter Blade

https://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/thumb/9/91/Illusionary_Riposte.png/48px-Illusionary_Riposte.png https://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/thumb/a/ac/Counter_Blade.png/48px-Counter_Blade.png

Very flexible skill that’s mostly used to block but can also be reactivated for a small amount of CC.

You can get more blocks out of this skill by jumping. Jumping prevents your character from being able to cast the phantasm that would be created by a block thus extending the amount of times you can block with this skill.

Phantasmal Swordsman

https://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/thumb/4/48/Phantasmal_Swordsman.png/48px-Phantasmal_Swordsman.png

A high damage Phantasm that’s best used as an alternative to Avengers depending on your team composition(see Swordsman vs Avenger)

Shield

Echo of Memory/Deja Vu

https://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/thumb/9/95/Echo_of_Memory.png/48px-Echo_of_Memory.png https://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/thumb/8/8d/Deja_Vu.png/48px-Deja_Vu.png

Strongest skill in your set, allows you to block twice for 1.5 seconds each and it will create an Avenger per cast if you block an attack.

The Avenger applies 2 seconds of Alacrity per attack to your allies and 2 seconds of Slow to your enemies.

In most team comps it’s optimal to keep up 3 Avengers(see Swordsman vs Avenger) but this isn’t always possible.

This is also your biggest source of Alacrity you have available.

Tides of Time

https://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/thumb/8/80/Tides_of_Time.png/48px-Tides_of_Time.png

The most powerful skill besides Echo of Memory, it has no target limit and can hit multiple times on big hitboxes meaning it will do anywhere between 200 and 600 breakbar damage.

It also applies Quickness each time it passes through you or your allies.

The cooldown is reduced by catching the returning projectile.

It also has no target limit meaning it will give all 10 players in the Squad Quickness if aimed correctly.

Utilities, Heal & Elite

Well of Eternity

https://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/thumb/b/b4/Well_of_Eternity.png/48px-Well_of_Eternity.png

Strong AoE heal that removes 3 conditions and adds 2 seconds of Alacrity from all's well that ends well.

Well of Action

https://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/thumb/f/fc/Well_of_Action.png/48px-Well_of_Action.png

Damages and slows enemies that are in it and grants 6 seconds of Quickness when it ends. This skill provides one of the longest Quickness stacks which makes it a really important source of Quickness.

Mimic

A really versatile skill which makes the next utility skill use within the next 10seconds have a 1 second cooldown.

Well of Recall

Provides 7seconds of alacrity and chills foes. This should be first skill swapped out if you need some other utility.

Signet of Inspiration

https://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/thumb/e/ed/Signet_of_Inspiration.png/48px-Signet_of_Inspiration.png

Even after the rework it's still one of the strongest skills you have for providing quickness. Shares now copy to yourself making it feel similar to well of action. Shares up to 6 seconds of every Duration stacking buff(i.e. Quickness, Swiftness etc.) but only 1 stack of every Intensity stacking buff(i.e. Might, Stability). The duration of the boons you share is dependant on your boon duration not the duration of the boons you already have.

Gravity Well

Deals 550 breakbar damage and grants 2 seconds of alacrity from Alls Well that Ends Well. You should never delay your Continuum Split to eliminate the cooldown because it will have a negative impact on quickness uptime.

Signet of Humility

Deals 1000 breakbar damage from up to 1,200 range but has an extreamly long cooldown. However the cooldown can be reduced by taking domination. Like Gravity Well you should never delay your Continuum Split to eliminate the cooldown because it will have a negative impact on quickness uptime.

Timewarp

Amost completely useless now because of the 5 stack limit. You'll gain at most 1.7 seconds of quickness assuming you don't make any mistakes in your continuum split rotation.

Portal and Blink

https://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/thumb/8/81/Portal_Entre.png/48px-Portal_Entre.png  https://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/thumb/1/16/Blink.png/48px-Blink.png

Currently only used for the Ghostrun Event, the start of Escort and Twisted Castle.

See the Portal section for details.

Domi Recall

Very similar to the old Domi rotation and allows the most room for mistakes while still keeping perma quickness. Has the second highest alacrity uptime, requiring 1.8 avengers to maintain perma alacrity on your sub-group, assuming they stand within all of your wells. Due to requiring 1.8 avengers for perma alacrity it will be the 3rd highest personal DPS without sacrificing group support. Also brings defensive support to your team with shared invuln on signet cast. Which can be used in many places to enable your team to have a more golem like rotation, such as distorting green circles on VG or slams at Gorseval. If you're new to chrono I recommend using this rotation for every encounter and experimenting with others once you feel more comfortable with the class.

Illu Recall

Fairly similar to the old Illusions rotation, but now with very little room for error. While waiting for contiuum split you'll drop to 1-2seconds of quickness, even with a perfect rotation on the golem. In a real raid this doesn't happen because Tides of Time affects 10 targets meaning the other mesmer will fill the gap in your rotation. Has the highest alacrity uptime, requiring only 1.53 avengers to maintain perma alacrity on your sub-group, assuming they stand within all of your wells. Second highest DPS due to it requiring less avengers than Domi Recall. Note that more of your damage comes from phantasms in this build than domi, if you aren't able to maintain 3 phantasms you might be better off using domi instead. The main reason to play this build is for the reduced recharge on shatter skills, which lets you have invul up everytime sloth uses his deadly spore attack. Also it will give you different continuum split timings. You'll have to experiment with this part yourself to see what works best for you with your groups DPS, as that will affect when certain boss attacks and invul phases happen in your rotation.

Note: Mimic rotations are almost always worse than recall rotations in the current meta

Domi Mimic

Pretty different rotation to the one with recall, takes a bit to get used to it. Provides the least alacrity of the rotations, only reaching 100% with 3 avengers. Also has the lowest personal damage so unlikely to be used except in niche scenarios.

Illu Mimic

Feels similar to the recall rotation but has a little more room for small mistakes. Doesn't have much alacrity, only third highest, but has more quickness.

Domi/Illu Mimic

Primarily a selfish build, it priorities personal damage over group support, but still provides perma quickness. Very little room for error, you have to time your signets perfectly to maintain perma quickness but it can be done. You should probably use this only in a group that gains little from alacrity and try to keep up more swordsmen instead. Also note that since this build doesn't have inspiration so you lose the ablitity to share distorion to allies.

Written Rotations

These will be your baseline rotations that you can modify depending on the situation and circumstances, however still try to stick to it as close as you can.

Alacrity Uptime

Quickness Cap Explained

Wondering why Timewarp is no longer part of your rotation? It's because there's a hidden cap on the number of quickness sources. The cap used to be 9 but with the 18/10 patch it is now 5 sources.

Each skill applies 1 stack of Quickness every time it affects you. For example, Tides of Time gives you 1 stack of Quickness at the start of the cast to you and your teammates and then 1 when it comes back to you. Another example is Timewarp which gives you 1 stack each second it pulses for a total of 11 Stacks over the whole duration . As soon as you have 5 stacks of Quickness, any stacks applied after that have no effect unless the new stack has a longer duration than any quickness stack you already have.

Here you can see the Domi Recall rotation with timewarp, with a timer added that starts when the first stack of quickness is applied.

The rotation was broken down frame by frame, following each stack of quickness, recording it in a spreadsheet until Timewarp ends.

(Click for full size)

Repeated the process, ignoring any quickness from Timewarp.

(Click for full size)

You can see that quickness stacks are overwritten frequently with Timewarp, finishing with 19.5 seconds of quickness. Where as without Timewarp only a single stack is overwritten, and finishes on 17.8 seconds of quickness. This means that you only gain 1.70seconds of quickness from Timewarp, which is insignificant. It's already possible to maintain perma quickness without using Timewarp, so instead you can take Gravity Well or Signet of Humility for their breakbar damage.

Vale Guardian

- For the endboss try to block as many dazes from the boss(his 3rd auto) using Mimic instead of Well of Action and Well of Precognition instead of Well of Recall + Timewarp so you replace the quickness loss from not having Well of Action. Try to also Invuln his daze using Signet of Inspiration or the SOI on phantasm cast and chain as many blocks and invulns so your party can free dps and not dodge/get dazed. You can chain block 4 times using Well of Precognition and then 1 Invuln using Signet of Inspiration.
